Rift with Jayalalitha
Natarajan did not share good and healthy relation with Jayalalitha. He was not in a good list of Jayalalitha. Jayalalithaa had reportedly asked Sasikala to choose between her and Natarajan. Sasikala chose Jayalalitha. The rift started when Sasikala and her husband moved into “Veda Nilayam” Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence soon after MGR’s death in 1987. Natarajan was kicked out in 1990 for trying to “dominate” Jayalalithaa. He was imprisoned by the Jayalalithaa government in 2012 and written off in political circles. He was not allowed to enter in Jayalalitha’s home until she was alive.
Mannargudi is a small town in Tiruvarur district in the Cauvery delta where Sasikala hails from. ‘Mannargudi Mafia’ is a close knit group of relatives and associates who are alleged to have spread out across the government machinery into important positions taking advantage of Sasikala’s proximity to Jayalalithaa. Natarajan is also the part of Manargudi Mafia. Jayalalithaa sent some of the ‘Mannargudi Mafia’ to prison between 2011 and 2016 including M Natarajan.
